Mediterranean Junior Researchers Alliance -- MedJRA

Why a mailing list?

A mailing list is a general-interest tool (non-invasive) that gathers the addresses of an identified community. The purpose of this mailing list is to promote mutual support among young PhDs and PhD candidates in marine ecology and related fields around the Mediterranean.

The goal is to encourage the exchange of opportunities (job offers, funding, training, conferences), the sharing of experiences, and mutual support in building our professional paths. Here, everyone can ask questions, share useful resources, and benefit from the support of an engaged community.

Adressing a need

The research environment is becoming increasingly competitive, both in France and elsewhere, with postdoctoral opportunities becoming rarer. After completing a PhD, it can be challenging to embark on a career, to allow oneself to explore new paths, and to carve out one’s own journey. In this context, the exchange and sharing of information are essential tools to support this transition and overcome these challenges.

Gathering and structuring

A geographical choice was made by taking the Mediterranean as an anchor point, with the aim of uniting a community. Of course, this does not exclude anyone. Many laboratories line the Mediterranean coastline without necessarily focusing their research exclusively on this ecosystem. However, this proximity naturally fosters an interest in the Mediterranean and its dynamics. Encouraging exchanges between these laboratories and connecting them via the MedJRA would facilitate better information flow and strengthen collaboration within this scientific community.

A space for sharing and respect

This mailing list is founded on essential values: sharing, kindness, and respect. Everyone should feel free to ask questions, express ideas, and engage in open discussions within a constructive and inclusive framework. The goal is to create a space where mutual support is paramount, individual experiences are valued, and information flows transparently and kindly. Respecting the diversity of backgrounds and viewpoints is fundamental to ensuring enriching exchanges and fostering a positive collective dynamic.

Animating and Engaging a Community Through a Tool: the Mailing List

A community functions optimally only when it is active and engaged. The mailing list is a simple yet powerful tool to maintain connections, share opportunities, and encourage exchanges. It allows for the rapid dissemination of relevant information, posing questions, seeking advice, and strengthening solidarity among young researchers. Everyone can contribute by sharing job offers, events, resources, or simply by bringing their experience. The more dynamic the participation, the more this space becomes a true network of mutual support and collaboration.
